How I made the most of my stopover in Amsterdam with a Greeter

Solo travel can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when you’re exploring a new city on a tight schedule. Carolina, our traveler, had just 36 hours to experience the charm of Amsterdam during her Europe stopover. Rather than wander aimlessly, she booked a Greeter for a customized bike tour through the city’s most iconic spots. From navigating hidden gems to feeling like a local on a bike, her experience with Greether and her Greeter, Joanna, became the highlight of her trip.

Read on to see how this short but sweet adventure unfolded! ✨😉

Q&A With Carolina:

Please share a bit about you:

Born in Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, all my life I was always exposed to different cultures while never forgetting where I come from. I have lived in and done extensive public health work in Latin America and the Caribbean for about ten years now. I am an avid traveler, whether it’s with friends, family, or on my own— I have been to over 25 countries (and counting)! I consider myself to be an athlete, playing sports like softball and volleyball since such a young age, and continue to challenge myself— I picked up running as a hobby this year and ran my first 10k and now plan on training for a half marathon!

Why did you decide to book a Greeter in Amsterdam?

I was solo traveling to Europe and had a stopover in Amsterdam for ~36 hours and I knew with such a short stay, I would be limited in seeing as much as possible so I booked a Greeter to get an authentic experience and what better way to do it than through a travel bucket list activity: bike riding through the city!

What do you think your Greeter helped you the most with?

It gave me a much better sense of direction of where the local must-see and do's spots are such as historical landmarks and places to eat and drink (like Foodhallen!), and even learned some history to gain a better understanding of what makes Amsterdam so unique.

Were there things that your Greeter showed you that made your experience better? Yes, Joanna was so knowledgeable about all things Amsterdam but most importantly gave me the confidence (and had so much patience) as I hopped on a bike for the first time in probably a decade or so. She made sure to teach me safety on the road and unwritten rules of bike riding-- all of which I truly appreciated and by the end of the tour, I was definitely getting the hang of it!

“Greether allowed me to have the perfect experience to explore more of Amsterdam and feel like a local.”

Why would you recommend booking a Greeter in Amsterdam?

Absolutely! From the moment I was connected with Joanna, it felt like Greether matched me with someone they knew would be the perfect fit for the experience I was looking to do. Joanna was communicative from the start, even created a route so I could see beforehand where we would stop, and curated it just so that I was able to return my rental at the bike shop in time for me to continue touring around town. It was truly the highlight of my trip!

What was the most valuable part of your experience with your Greeter? It felt like I was doing a morning workout with a friend; we got to know each other and Joanna asked me what I was looking forward to doing while visiting and made sure to provide some recommendations during the tour. I would have not been able to do this activity on my own nor learn as much as I did with any other tour.

Anything else you want to share that may be useful for more women who want to explore the city like you did?

Amsterdam is so beautiful and there is so much to see, so it can definitely be overwhelming whether you are by yourself or if you're new to traveling. I highly recommend booking some of the well-known museums in advance (like the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum), but allow yourself time to roam around whether that is on foot or bicycle to truly embrace how unique this place is. Greether allowed me to have the perfect experience to explore more of Amsterdam and feel like a local.
